The economic crash of 2008 nearly dismantled the American real estate industry. In an effort to right the ship, the federal government passed what is known as Dodd-Frank Legislation, which put minimum standards into place for mortgage lenders. While the legislation was designed to make home ownership easier in some senses, it also made things even more complex for some of the people who were facing financial ruin because of the recession.
